Betty Hackett Carson

Mrs. Betty J. Hackett Carson, Age 71 of New Middleton, TN. passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage, TN.Mrs. Carson was born February 1, 1940 in Monoville, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Benton Bridgewater and Ovie Lee Gregory Hackett. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents Walter and Sadie Hackett Gregory, her twin brother Bobby Hackett, and sisters Beverly Jane Hackett and Mary Julia West.Betty graduated from Smith County High School in 1958, and was married to Paul Carson of New Middleton in 1969. Betty and Paul have one son, Paul Gregory Carson, who was born May 25, 1970. A highlight of Betty’s life was when Greg married Rachel Jenkins in October of 2010. She was excitedly preparing for the birth of her new grandson, Robert Wayne Carson. Mrs. Carson worked in the offices of Carthage Shirt Factory and Smith County Farmers’ Co-op. She was known all over the county for her many activities. She was a member and the treasurer of New Middleton Baptist Church, as well as serving on the Benevolence Committee, has served on the board at Smith County Help Center since its beginning in 2000, was vice-president of the Democratic Women of Smith County, and was a member and active volunteer of the Smith County Historical and Genealogical Society. Betty has also been on the board of Smith County Heritage Museum since 2008.Betty was known for her dry wit, her excellent cooking skills, impeccable appearance, and her loving generosity and willingness to help others. She enjoyed preserving and displaying old family and historical items in her home.She is survived by her husband Paul Carson of New Middleton, Son, Greg and daughter-in-law Rachel Carson of New Middleton, unborn grandson Robert Wayne Carson, sisters Ann Hackett of Carthage, Lucille Dixon of Carthage and Billie Jo (Jim) Womack of Birmingham, AL. and one Brother, Homer “Buddy” (Carrie Nell) Hackett of Cookeville, and several nieces and nephews.Mrs. Carson’s remains are at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes where Services will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. with Bro. Chris Young, Bro. Ben Garner and Bro. Mark Stinnett officiating. Interment will follow at Smith County Memorial Gardens, Carthage, TN.The Carson family will receive friends at the Gordonsville Chapel on Saturday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and on Sunday from 11:00 A.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.Memorials may be made to the New Middleton Baptist Church Building Fund, 493 New Middleton Highway, Gordonsville, TN. 38563
