Evelyn Gibbs Fisher

Mrs. Evelyn Gibbs Fisher, age 78 of Carthage, TN passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at NHC in Cookeville, TN. Evelyn was born August 25, 1934, the daughter of the late Mary Conditt Cardwell and Rev. Phocian Gibbs. She married Harold Kenneth Fisher on July 29, 1950 and he preceded her in death on July 21, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her Brothers; William Harold Gibbs and Floyd Kenneth Gibbs, Sister; Mary Frances Gibbs, and Great Granddaughter; Aliyah Giffin. She attended Smith County High School. Evelyn and her late husband, Kenneth, were the former owners and operators of the Fishers Restaurant. She retired as Director of the Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency in Carthage. Evelyn served as Chairwoman of the Smith County Democratic Party following her husband’s death in 1987. She was re-elected to Chairwoman and remained in that position for over 20 years. She will be remembered for her community services to the elderly, disadvantaged, children, and single mothers. She was a tireless hard worker with skills in fundraising and campaigning for candidates at many levels (local, state, congressional, and Presidential) in the Democratic Party. She will be remembered by many and missed by more. She was a lifetime member of the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Elmwood, TN.Mrs. Fisher is survived by her Children; Sherry Fisher (Marc Tuley) of Carthage, TN, Jerry Thomas Fisher of Cookeville, TN, Kerry Alan Fisher of Cookeville, TN, and Vikki Michelle Fisher Thomas of Cookeville, TN. Seven Grandchildren; Hollie Fisher (Mike) Farmer, Tiffany Cummings (Steve) Speshock, Noble E. Cummings, IV, Darci Fisher (Jeremy) Alexander, Toni Jynn Fisher (Jon) Giffin, Morgan Fisher, and Natalya Fisher. Three Great Grandchildren; Abram and Amelia Speshock, and Gracie Farmer. Two Sister-in-Laws; Mildred Wyatt Gibbs and Mary Frances Baker Gibbs and a multitude of loving nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. Funeral Services for Mrs. Fisher are scheduled to be conducted on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 12 Noon at the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes with Eld. Charles Allen Gentry and Elder James T. Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.Visitation with the Fisher family will be held on Sunday from 2PM until 7PM and again on Monday after 11AM until the service time at 12 Noon.Donations in Mrs. Fisher’s memory may be made to the Smith County Library.Pallbearers: Nephews: Ken Gibbs, Jimmy Gibbs, Terry Gibbs, Eric Gibbs, Steve Gibbs, and Aubrey Givens.Honorary Pallbearers: Smith County Democratic Party.
