Geraldine Apple

Mrs. Elizabeth Geraldine Pettross Apple, Age 91 of Gordonsville, TN., died Friday, September 23, 2011 at Smith County Healthcare Center, Carthage, TN. Mrs. Apple was born February 19, 1920 in the Horseshoe Bend Community of Smith County, TN., one of eleven children of the late Vance Lee, Sr. and Cora Fincannon Pettross. Three of her siblings died as infants, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sidney Burton “S.B.” Pettross, and four sisters, Catherine Pettross, Pauline (Henry) Kennedy, Bessie (Adron) Bennett and Celestia (Leo) Lannom. Mrs. Apple was also preceded in death by her grandparents: Burton and Emily Jones Fincannon and Sidney and Satira Knight Pettross. Mrs. Apple was educated at the Robinson School and attended Carthage High School. She was married to Howard “Macon” Apple on November 11, 1936 in Cookeville, TN and he preceded her in death on December 3, 1983. For over 40 years they lived on the Haynes-Apple Farm on Hogan Road in Gordonsville where they raised championship mules shown in Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1977 they won the Grand Champion Horse Mule ribbon at the Columbia Mule Show. In addition to working on the farm with her husband, Mrs. Apple was employed for numerous years at the Carthage Shirt Corporation. She was a long time member of the Gordonsville United Methodist Church where she joined in July, 1948 and particicpated in numerous activities. Her interest included gardening, antiquing, and traveling with tour groups. She had a special wit and was truly a friend to all. Surviving are two brothers: Vance Pettrosss, Jr. and wife, Frances of Gordonsville and Glenn Allen Pettross and wife, Billie of Carthage. Loving Nieces and Nephews: Albert (Ladye Lou) Bennett, Emily (Larry) Lowrance, L. K. (Susan) Lannom of Gallatin; Harold Bennett of Lebanon; Vivian Krajewski of Gordonsville; Mark Pettross of Hermitage; Michael Pettross of Brentwood; Mitchell Pettross of Nashville: James Kennedy, Larry Kennedy and Janice (Ronnie) Milligan of Chattanooga; Peggy (Tom) Roaden of Goodlettsville and a special friend, Amy (Milt) Collins and their son, Bert of Cookeville. Mrs. Apple’s remains are at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes where Services will be held on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Dickie Johnson and Bro. George Reed, officiating. Interment will be in the Apple family plot at Gordonsville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews.The Apple family will receive friends at the Gordonsville Chapel on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at 11:00 A.M.Memorials may be made to the Gordonsville United methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.
