Jewell Brown McDonald

Mrs. Jewell Brown McDonald, Age 87, Of Gordonsville, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Smith County Healthcare Center in Carthage.Mrs. McDonald was born August 11, 1922 in the Rome Community of Smith County, the youngest child of the late Oscar Robert Brown and Willie Lokey Scoggins. She married Roy Ivan McDonald on October 4, 1941 and he preceded her in death on November 17, 2001. She was also preceded in death by Five Brothers: Rufus, Charles, A.J., M.C., and Ollie Brown. Two Sisters: Irene Williams and Virginia Broach. She was a member of the Gordonsville Church of Christ. Mrs. McDonald was known for her love and concern for the well being of children and families. In 1972 she began work as a teacher assistant for the Cordell Hull Head Start Program and in 1976 became supervisor at the Head Start center in Carthage. In addition to her supervision responsibilities, she trained other teachers so that they could obtain a national Child Development teaching credential. She was among the first 500 teachers in the United States to receive the national teaching credential. In 1979 she became a Specialist in the Head Start State Training office.Mrs. McDonald is survived by Three Daughters: Brenda (Larry) Bradford of Gordonsville, TN., Beverly Lancaster of Nashville, TN., and Bonnie (Bill) Stafford of Hickman, TN. Six Grandchildren: Andy (Tracy) Bradford, Tony ( Brittany) Bradford, Ashley Bradford, Jason Lancaster, Bryan (Jasmine) Stafford, and Dawn Stafford. Nine Great Grandchildren: Jordan Bradford, Tyler Bradford, Owen Bradford, Austin Enoch, Maggie Jewell Bradford, Connor Bradford, Lilly Kate Bradford, Adalynn Stafford, Brooks Stafford. Funeral Services for Mrs. McDonald are scheduled to be conducted Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 2 PM at the Gordonsville Church of Christ. John Griffin and Eulogist, Ken Nye will officiate and Interment will follow in the Gordonsville Cemetery. Visitation with the McDonald family will be at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Saturday from 2 PM to 8 PM and on Sunday at the Gordonsville Church of Christ after 12 Noon. Grandsons and Great-Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.The McDonald family request that memorials be made to the Gordonsville Church of Christ or the Alzheimers Association.
